What to Expect At a Rhinoplasty Consultation
By Leanne Williams If you are considering undergoing rhinoplasty (or to use laymans terms, a nose job) you have probably already spent many hours researching the procedure on the internet. Your next step should be to book a consultation at the clinic. Many clinics do not charge for this initial consultation, but you should check the clinics individual policy in advance. Before attending your appointment, you should be aware of what the consultation entails, what you should bring with you and think about what questions you would like to ask. You dont necessarily have to bring anything with you to your consultation, but it is a good idea to bring the following items, as it will help communicate your wants and needs to the surgeon. The first thing you should consider bringing is a list of questions to ask about the rhinoplasty procedure, the clinic, previous operations the surgeon has performed, etc. Most of these will be covered in the consultation but it is best to think about what you want to know, just in case. Writing your questions down will ensure nothing gets missed, as it normal to be a little nervous at your consultation and become a little forgetful as a result. If possible, it is also a good idea to bring photos of noses you admire as this can help the surgeon visualise what end result you are looking for. The consultant should discuss all aspects of the rhinoplasty procedure at length. He will first discuss what you want to achieve, then use his expertise to advise if these expectations are realistic and suggest what he thinks the best course of action would be. Your motivation for undergoing the procedure will be assessed and he will ask questions about your medical history to ensure there are no existing conditions which could make surgery risky or unfeasible. Once it has been confirmed that you are a suitable candidate for rhinoplasty you will be advised of your options for surgery, for instance if open or closed surgery is the best choice for you, scar placement, and whether general anaesthetic or IV sedation is required. You will also be advised of the risks related to rhinoplasty surgery and anaesthesia, and will be asked to sign a consent form. Before signing the consent sheet, ensure the surgeon genuinely has covered all the possible risks listed on it. Your surgeon should be able to provide you with a portfolio of cosmetic surgery he has previously performed. Most clinics also provide referral sheets to allow you to contact previous patients who have already undergone the procedure. It is wise to take up the offer of speaking to former patients as they will be able to give an honest opinion on whether a nose job was beneficial, give their experience on surgery, recovery and how they were cared for by the clinic, and let you know if they would recommend the surgeon or not. At the end of the consultation you will be advised of the fees and costs relating to your potential surgery. You are not under any obligation to commit to having a nose job and may want time to go away and consider your decision. If you are certain you want to proceed then you may be given a preliminary surgery date at the consultation, and will possibly be required to pay a deposit. You will also be given a preoperative date for undergoing lab work, blood tests and being given instructions on how to prepare for your surgery. Preparation is often the key to a successful and positive consultation. The better the communication between you and your surgeon, the greater likelihood there is that you will receive exactly what you want and that Leanne has had several articles published on the subject of having a nose job, including finding a rhinoplasty surgeon.
