Math Is Counter Culture

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

By Ann LaRoche Think about it! Our culture today is all about instant gratification. It is all about I want it now. Yet Math is counter culture. Math is about struggling to understand. Math is about working out a solution and maybe even going down a few dead ends before the solution reveals itself. Math is work. Its no wonder that learning math is rejected in our lets make it easy society. Now we do try to fool ourselves. I see a lot of products such as Math Made Simple, Math Made Easy, Math tricks, All the Math Youll Ever Need to Know in One Book. I hate this advertising for several reasons. One reason that just glares in my face is the misnomer of it. What did they do to make math easy? What happened to the hard math? Also the name is misleading. What may be an easy or simple approach to learning math for you, may not be simple for me. What are you lead to believe about yourself if you still dont get it and yet it is easy math? What are you telling your child with this product? Do you believe your child is capable of doing ‘real’ math? What is your child going to do when he is finally faced with real’ math? Are they going to find out that he has been faking math all this time? In his mind, it is not a matter of ‘will they find out’, but ‘when’. Sadly, I know adults who feel they aren’t any good at math. They feel that they have been faking it. They dread the day when they will be found out. Some have changed college majors and others have given up on dream careers all in fear that the math would eventually be more than they could handle. That faking the math wouldn’t work anymore. It is sad but true. Do you see where Im going with this? Is this real math or what? But back it this counter-culture idea of instant gratification. What is wrong with struggling to understand something? Am I stupid because Johnny figured the problem out before I did? I dont think so! Yet a lot of parents get anxious about their child when they compare him to his classmates. Johnny knows his multiplication tables, so you must know them too. Your brother never had any problem with math. What’s wrong with you? Then there’s the dreaded incident of being call to the blackboard to answer a simple math problem and you don’t know how. These situations shouldn’t happen. They are damaging and are in no way a reflection of a person’s true math capabilities. Yet they happen and they lead our children to believe less of their capabilities. As a parent myself, I think it is okay to struggle at math but no one should be embarrassed because they struggle. Have you ever considered that maybe your child is better off for having struggled to get the answer? Does the struggle build character, fortitude, perserverance? What does instant gratification build? What does Made Easy build? Self esteem is built through true accomplishments that come after struggle and persisting in the face of failure and finally succeeding. Isnt that the self esteem you want for your child. Well you cant have it with instant gratification. Learning math is certainly made easier when you can find an approach or teaching method that matches your learning style. Learning math is easier when you want to learn it, when it is fun like a game. Learning math becomes easier when you have a reason for learning it. Fulfill these three requirements and you will unlock the secret of learning math. Fulfill these three requirements for your child and you will have a child who wants to learn math, who enjoys the challenge. But I wont say learning math is easy. Maybe the learning will be easier but that is up to you and how you encourage your child in math. Ann LaRoche, Math Expert and Author of the book “Math Is Child’s Play.” Ann advocates learning math by playing games. Card games and board games are the fun and easy way to strengthen math skills and improve problem solving capabilities. In her book, Ann debunks common math myths, addresses math anxiety, and gives practical advice to parents who want to help their child with math but feel unable or unqualified. Ann sheds light on the confusion wrought by New Math and has a process for handling math homework time that will turn those tears of frustration into smiles of triumph. Dreadlocks and Their Application in Society Today

Friday, March 7th, 2008

By Arjun Mukherjee The dreadlock An Indian monk was slowly moving through the roads and people were looking at him with surprised interest. The dress, the attire, the posture were all alien to people of the western world but what attracted their attention most was the matted ropes of hair on the head of the monk. That is exactly what we call the dreadlock, hair on the head allowed to grow without cutting, combing or brushing to take the shape of matted ropes. Origin One of the universal phenomenons that have survived the onslaught of time, dreadlock has its origin rooted in the ancient Vedic Hindu culture. In the Hindu mythologies it is described that Lord Shiva took the force off the holy river Ganges coming to the earth on his dreadlock and thus saved the earth from destruction. Historically too the earliest evidence of dreadlock is found around 2500 years BC and have been mostly the favorite hair style of sages and monks. The immediate impact Hinduism had its influence on Buddhism, Jainism and even the Greek and Roman cultures of the past. In the Roman Celtic culture dreadlock was referred to as hair knotted like snakes. The royal families in ancient Egypt not only adopted the dreadlock but also used dreadlocked wigs as archeological discoveries have revealed. Other cultures Dreadlock was used not only in Egypt, Rome, and Greece but Germany, Mexico, Far East, Africa and several other countries. In Germany the Vikings, in Far East the Naga tribe, the Bishops of Jerusalem, Aztecs of Mexico were all well attached with Dreadlocks. Dreadlock was one of the most popular hair styles in these countries during the 14-16th century AD and they were also found with the Sufi Order in Senegal. The modern era During 1950s in Jamaica the people followers of Young Black Faith took heavily the style of dreadlocks following the cue of poor people there who had been using dreadlocks since the 1930s. It is also said that when Hindu and Naga saints started visiting Jamaica in pursuit of jobs in the 19th century, the dreadlock culture came up with them to Jamaica. A few others trace the origin to the Mau Mau rebels who were fighting against the British colonialism of the time. Why dreadlocks? Dreadlocks have been used by people coming from different cultural backgrounds with different reasons. Sometimes it is due to their religious and spiritual convictions like it is sacred among Hindu saints and monks and at other time social and political environments like used by the Mau Mau rebels. To avert the derogatory use of the term a new term has come up to replace the term dreadlock and it is often referred to as African Locks, the aim being to remove the feature of dreading from the terminology. The importance of dreadlocks in Eastern countries Dreadlocks are considered sacred by the Indian religious preachers since it has its origin with the holy Lord Shiva. In China too noblemen and ascetics used dreadlocks combined with long fingernails denouncing all earthly attachments. In some other Asian and African countries the dreadlock refers to the fear of the almighty. Dreadlocks and the western world today When the reggae music made a big stride during the 1980s, the dreadlocks used by the world famous singer and lyrist Bob Marley caught the imagination of the audience world over and there was a rush to wear dreadlocks. This became most popular among the African-Americanized people but white people did not remain far behind. Especially the people who raise their voice for anti-globalization, and the activists who support the cause of environment-protection find dreadlocks to their choice, a symbol of registering their protest against the possible evils of globalization and environmental pollution. Specialty Online Dating Sites

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

By Pierre Smith Not all online dating sites are created equal. Some will be tools to hook you up with the right match and some will make you want to take matches and set yourself on fire from disappointment. You see, the whole concept of online dating and matchmaking sites is fantastic. These sites serve as a common platform for individuals looking for a match that they would not ordinarily meet through their regular daily activities. However, because of the many subscribers and other individuals out there looking for a match, you might have to go through quite a number of profiles and potential matches before you can move on to the business of real romance. Fortunately, because online dating has become so successful, the business is beginning to thrive and diversify to be able to meet the needs and demands of their market. This is what brought on specialty online dating sites that offer individuals a more defined niche. For instance, if you are an African American interested in meeting other African American for friendship and perhaps romance. You can join black dating online sites that cater precisely to African American looking to hook up with other African American. Even though these black dating online sites are specialized, you will still need to exercise the same amount of common sense and caution that you would do on other online dating sites. For instance, in searching for the right black dating site you may find ones that offer their matchmaking services for free. While initially you may think this is a good idea, think again. Free black dating sites, like other online dating sites, cannot really be free. There will have to be a trade off somewhere because unfortunately, nothing comes without a price. Free black dating sites might be inundated with unwanted and annoying advertisements that get in the way of your search for romance. If not that, a free black dating service might sell your details to a third party so that they can earn off you. This will mean that at the very least, you will be flooded with junk mail and spam. At the end of the day however, it is still up to you to decide if you are willing to accept the trade offs offered by these free black dating sites. Speaking of free service, some sites will offer free initial trial with an option to pay after a satisfying test run. This could be a good idea because then you can test their service and check out the network without having to commit to it through a subscription charge. When you buy a car, you need to take it for a test drive and you should look out for black dating sites that offer this deal so you know what you’d be getting before buying. While scoping out the network, make sure to check if there are black singles subscribed to the service from your area or relatively close to your area. Before getting carried away in a romantic virtual relationship, make sure that it is geographically possible for you turn the relationship from virtual to actual. Lastly, the look and feel of a black dating site will determine the type of people subscribed to it. For instance if the black dating site has a young, hip and metro-active feel to it then its subscribers are probably upwardly mobile yuppies and if you are one of them, that just might be the right black dating site for you. Pierre Smith provides helpful information that brings a lot of tips and ideas on specialty online dating sites to you. Visit also his website to learn more on what you need to know about online dating sites and how to get the most dating success with your free meet women crash course. Seven Sinus Headache Solutions

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

By Mike Lindsey 1. Try steam inhalation as one of your sinus headache solutions. Steam inhalation is an excellent way of clearing all the spaces inside. If you have an infection too, steam inhalation can be very soothing. But there is a word of caution that I have to offer here, before you start undertaking this method as one of your sinus headache solutions, * Be very careful about you eyes. Remember that it is not advisable to expose your eyes to steam and so take care to protect your eyes when you are inhaling steam. * Another thing that you should be careful about is the temperature of the steam. You just need fairly hot water and not scorching hot, sizzling vapors of water. The object is not to scald your skin but to send some warm vapors up your nose, In fact steam inhalation is one of the most recommended sinus headache solutions. The point that you should bear in mind is that the sooner you inhale once you get the headache, the faster and more effective your pain relief for severe migraine, will be. If you wait for long hours before you inhale, you are going to have to inhale longer and at shorter intervals in order for the inhalation to be an effective treatment. 2. Menthol vapors too can be used as one of your headaches home remedies. Yes these too can help towards clearing your sinuses. Try dissolving a balm or ointment in the hot water that has to be inhaled. Then inhale the vapors. This is the very best way to inhale menthol vapors. 3. You can also make your own face pack at home using things that are 100% safe on your skin. One of the best face packs that I have come across that is extremely effective is a curd face pack. What you have to do is chill curd in the refrigerator for a few minutes. If you do not have curd, yogurt will do. Then all you have to do is apply a thin coating of this curd or yogurt on your forehead and on the region around your eyes. But you must be careful to see that it does not get into your eyes. When you feel that the first coat has dried up apply one more coat. Then lie down with your face up for five to ten minutes. 4. Aerosols are bad for you, they can be triggers as well, so try not to use them as far as possible. 5. Crying is not good for you. When you cry for even a minute or two there is very good chance that the tears will lead to a headache. If you feel you might start crying, try breathing deeply, or try to lie down and fall asleep. Some situations are unavoidable, but some, like sad movies, are easy to avoid. Use some common sense. 6. Blow your nose often. Blowing your nose helps to get rid of the mucus that accumulates in the sinuses. It is better if you can blow your nose immediately after a steam inhalation. 7. If you have an allergic condition like a dust allergy, stay away from dust as it can trigger an infection. Make sure you change your air filters regularly, and consider buying special filters for people with dust allergies. If you find it impossible to stay away from dust at least wear a gas mask. Tour Operators, Holiday Packages and Holiday Loans

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=J._Vipul]J. Vipul When you are planning to go on a holiday trip, the first thing you do is hiring a tour operator. Tour operators are companies that offer complete holiday packages. A typical holiday package includes airline tickets, hotel accommodation, meals, transportation, tourist guide, meals, etc. In short, a tour operator takes away your headache and provides you a smooth, hassle free holiday tour. When you buy a holiday package, you will not have to bother about anything. Your air tickets will reach your home. Once you reach your destination, you will be taken to a hotel where your room will have already been booked. You may even get a tourist guide who will make your holidays easy and trouble free. But for all these services, you will have to pay a price. The tour operator will charge holiday expenses and service charges from you. Not everyone can afford to pay for a holiday trip. If you do not have money for it, you will have to take out a holiday loan . Banks, building societies and private lenders offer holiday loans. There are different types of loans that can be used to pay for a holiday trip. The most common type of holiday loans is personal loans. Personal loans are offered by almost all lenders and can be used for a number of purposes; buying a holiday package is one such purpose. A holiday loan can be both secured and unsecured. To obtain a holiday loan , you have to offer your property as collateral. Secured loans are easily given by lenders since they are backed by a security. Thats not all. Lenders even charge a low rate of interest on secured loans. You can take out an unsecured holiday loan if you cannot offer a security. The rate of interest on unsecured loan is higher than the rate on secured loan. Before you apply for a holiday loan, estimate the amount that you will need for the trip. Do not take out an amount that exceeds your budget, otherwise you will have to pay interest on the amount that you did not need in the first place. Cold Sore Symptoms - The Domino Effect

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

By Denny Bodoh Knowing your personal cold sore symptoms and being sensitive to them is an essential part of reducing the severity - or completely eliminating - cold sore symptoms from your life. Let me explain. Cold sore symptoms are caused by the replication process of the herpes simplex virus. 89% of people worldwide have this virus in their body, so it is quite universal. 67% of those folks will experience cold sore symptoms at least once - most often 2 or more times - in the next 12 months. There are NO cold sore symptoms when the herpes virus is latent (sleeping) within your nerve cells. If they wake up due to some physical stress like flu, colds, or mental stress - then the cold sore symptoms start. And it’s like a “domino effect” - from one symptom to the next. The first of the cold sore symptoms many call the itching stage. The cold sore target area will starts to feel uncomfortable. Itching, dryness, tingling, or burning sensations are common. When you start feeling these cold sore symptoms - beware! You are only a day or two away from more severe cold sore symptoms. The itching stage, without a doubt, is the most important of all cold sore symptoms. Treating this phase of your cold sore symptoms immediately and correctly is the secret to being cold sore free for life. To prevent further cold sore symptoms, or at least reduce their impact, try applying ice. Herpes virus hates cold. Applying ice during this phase sends the virus back to the latent stage for many people. I prefer ice because it’s readily available almost anywhere you are, it works very well and is basically free. Any cold object, like a can of soda, will help. The important thing is -the quicker you do this, the less likely you will have to suffer further cold sore symptoms. If nothing else, your cold sore symptoms will be a lot less severe. Pain relievers and fever reducers like aspirin are often used with much success during most of the symptoms. Some over-the-counter treatments contain numbing agents will help also. If you miss treating this symptom, then the other cold sore symptoms start dropping like dominos - fast and furious. The next of the cold sore symptoms is the inflammation phase. Hard red bumps appear and some pain is apparent. Swelling of the cold sore area develops. You may notice swelling of the lymph glands under the jaw, tiredness, headaches, possibly a slight fever - basically flu or cold like symptoms. The red bumps burst and merge causing an open, weeping sore. This is a quite painful time. Your nose may run, headaches are common. The fluid is teaming with new viruses and this is by far the most contagious period. Use caution. A secondary bacterial infection here could greatly extend and complicate your cold sore symptoms. Within a couple days a yellowish crust forms over the sore. Still very painful to the touch. Also, the crust often cracks, as when you smile, and that’s a major cause of pain in this phase of cold sore symptoms. You still may have headaches and feel feverish. Swollen lymph glands start to reduce. The skin is healing under the crust so there will be itching and general discomfort yet during this phase of your cold sore symptoms. Within a few days, maybe a week, the scab falls off. New skin covers the wound. Healing is still taking place under the new skin, producing a red spot for most people. This redness can last from 1-3 weeks. Itching and irritation is still a problem. Your lymph glands should be greatly reduced by now, but still noticeable. The feverish feeling and headaches should be about gone. One final note on cold sore symptoms. During the red spot period, the cold sore symptoms could start all over again quite easily - not unlike getting a head cold back right away. The key to reducing or eliminating cold sore events in your life is early detection and active treatment of your cold sore symptoms . Sounds Good To Me - A Bullied Bully

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

By Kacy Carr All our lives we have lived under threat from government laws that supposedly are to be in our best interest. This government now needs to take an interest in a mightier force where we fear for our lives and confined to our homes because of the street Bully. A visit to the corner shop to fetch a pint of milk can lead to receiving a pint of blood in a casualty ward. If the government is to impose new laws in our best interest then that is to take action with a view on sentencing the Bully with an eye for eye attitude. What is it going to take for the law to change and sort matters, how much more unnecessary blood spillage from innocent victims in hospital wired up to a machine acting as proxy for his/her last breath. Yobbos/bullies will carry on with their tirade of abuse using their fists feet and weapons on the defenceless because of the recognition received after conviction. The reward for crimes committed a warm bed, 3 hot meals, a wage at the end of the week and no rent to pay for the roof over their heads. This isn’t punishment for a Bully who cripple/maim or kills.Sever punishment levels have to be administered on the Bully before the next victim is left brain dead fighting for his/her life for reasons unknown to them selves. Bring back the ball/chain, hit them where it hurts take away the designer gear and replace with the arrow suit. However changing the laws for a stronger approach on sentences for the evil doer (Bully) is not enough if we can not catch them. First and foremost we need more law and enforcement patrolling our streets, how do you catch a criminal if sitting behind a desk. This government needs to double the number in boys of blue and get them out there saving the day (or a life) instead of wasting time on which politician is sleeping with who. I say a prayer as I write, for those who may have lost someone close who was victimised by a Bully or still are; do not suffer in silence, please get help. The Bully has to be stopped and quick, a Bully does not work alone without accomplices, his gang so as to speak. Give him the gang alright, The Chain Gang, as I stated earlier an eye for an eye how about throwing in a tooth for tooth as well. To do something with your life may just save your life. By furthering the education of you and your family is the only way forward to leave all your troubles behind.
