Do You Know How to Repot a Root-Bound Houseplant?

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

By Kathy Steinemann It is actually quite easy if you know the basics. It only takes a few minutes to give your houseplants a new lease on life. This article provides a few do’s and don’ts. A Larger Container is not Always Necessary (or Better) The mistake that many people make when they see roots migrating from the bottom of a pot is to buy a slightly larger container and place the overcrowded plant, root ball and all, in its new quarters. This may be a mistake! The roots may have wandered out in search of more oxygen due to overwatering or hard-packed earth. Analyze the situation. If soil is of poor quality and you suspect overwatering, your plant may simply need more drainage and a change of dirt. A larger pot is unnecessary. Poor Care Diagnosis? If your verdict is ‘poor care’, make sure that the root ball of the plant is slightly moist, and then carefully remove it from the old pot. Hold your hand over the top of the soil, supporting the plant between your fingers as you tip it over. Usually a plant will dislodge easily. However, you may need to pass a sharp knife between the outside of the root ball and the pot if it is stubborn. If the roots smell bad or appear to be rotting or discolored, you have an ailing patient! Care and Cure Add a 1-inch layer of gravel, broken pottery, or very small pebbles to the bottom of the pot for drainage. Very carefully loosen the roots, removing as much soil as possible with gentle shaking. A spray bottle filled with lukewarm water can be used to spray away even more soil. Cut off any roots that appear unhealthy. Make a small mound of good quality potting soil in the bottom of the pot. Position the plant gently to see how high it sits. You may need to add or subtract soil to place it at the correct level. Next, gently fill the area around the plant with more soil, packing lightly with your fingertips or the handle of a wooden spoon to ensure that there are no large air pockets. Carefully tap the pot a few times to settle contents. Finally, water very lightly, add more soil if necessary, and place the plant in an area away from drafts and direct sunlight until it has had a chance to recover from its trauma. Does it Just Need More Room to Grow? If you are sure that your plant has received the best of soil, light, and watering conditions, but it definitely needs repotting, try this approach instead. Remove the slightly moistened plant as previously mentioned. DO NOT LOOSEN THE ROOTS - you want the root ball to retain its shape. Use a very sharp butcher knife (not a serrated bread knife) - gently sawing about one inch off the bottom of the root ball. Gently loosen as much dirt as possible from the roots. Form a mound of soil in the pot and position as above, adding more soil and protecting from extremes of light and temperature for a week or so. Spider Plants Do not be in too big a rush to repot spider plants. ‘Spidering’ is triggered by overcrowding. Establish a Routine Some home gardeners repot their plants once every year, using the same treasured pots. Plants treated in this way do very well. Every potting cycle provides them with fresh nutrients. The old soil and roots can be composted and recycled. Make Greenery a Part of your Life Plants magically transform our homes, malls, and offices. They provide us with oxygen and filter impurities from the air. Even occupants of the tiniest apartments can protect the environment and their own health by carefully cultivating some indoor greenery. Saving Money on Blood Pressure Medication

Friday, October 19th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=George_McKenzie] George McKenzie For years, people who have been troubled by both high blood pressure and diabetic kidney problems have believed that the more expensive blood pressure medications gave them an added benefit in the form of protection for their kidneys. So, they tended to spend extra dollars on expensive blood pressure medications even though cheaper generic equivalents were available. The less expensive generics, they were being told by their doctors, did less to help keep their kidneys healthy. But a recent study on blood pressure medications and their relationship to kidney health has cast doubt on conventional wisdom. The study, conducted in the United Kingdom, suggests that the more expensive blood pressure medications offer no more benefit to the kidneys than the less expensive generics. The real key, the study seems to say, is finding a medication that brings blood pressure down. Dr. Raymond MacAllister at the Centre for Clinical Pharmacology at University College in London was quoted by HealthDay Reporter as saying, “In patients with high blood pressure who are at risk of progressive kidney disease — particularly diabetics — it doesn’t matter which blood pressure drug you use, provided you get good control of the blood pressure.” The current guidelines for treating blood pressure in patients with kidney disease, especially diabetics, calls for the use of two types of drugs — angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin-II receptor blockers (ARB). These are considered to be first-line medications to help lower blood pressure in those who have diabetic kidney disease. For several years, medical professionals have assumed that these drugs have specific protective effects for the kidneys, beyond their ability to lower blood pressure. But the study done my MacAllister’s group and published in the December 10, 2005 issue of The Lancet questions such assumptions. The British team looked at evidence supporting the use of ACE inhibitors and ARBs as first-line treatment for patients with kidney disease. They reviewed and examined results from 127 trials that investigated blood pressure-lowering drugs on the progression of kidney disease. They found that ACE inhibitors and ARBs fared no better than other blood pressure-lowering drugs in preventing diabetic kidney disease. It was also unclear if these two drug classes were more effective in patients with non diabetic kidney disease. McAllister also noted that the study would not come as welcome news to some pharmaceutical companies. But it will certainly please consumers who are already strapped and struggling with the high cost of blood pressure and kidney disease medications. Answer The Whys

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

By Katheryn Hoban When I was younger (and probably still now) my favorite question was Why? –Why this? Why that? Why does this happen? Why do you want me to do it? Why should I do it this way? I was a thoughtful child and for the most part my mother answered those whys with patience and gentleness. There were many times that Im sure that she answered I dont know, or because I said so. I was pretty stubborn if something didnt make sense for me to do I would not consider that answer to be valid. However when the why was answered and I could make sense of something, I would respond with confidence, attention and focus on the task immediately. I think children ask the whys for many reason. The first answer is that they are becoming thoughtful beings. They have a developing understanding of their immediate world, and you as the parent or guardian are the filter to that world. It is through expression of curiosity and a fulfilling answer that they begin to take cognitive jumps of reason, begin to fill in the gaps of the stimuli that they are receiving everyday, and that they make sense of the puzzle pieces all around them. Since most of the human contact to a child comes from the care giving parent, it is a reasonable for the child to think that you know all the answers. The second reason that a child asks the why is a form of test of you as they begin to get older. Are you going to be there for me? Are you still going to love me? Do you want to hold me when Im doing something that is not very nice? Do you still know everything? Do you have the correct answer? Should I trust you? Another reason that the child asks the whys is a form of reas-surance that you are still present, and that you and s/he still have interaction. She or he likes to hear the sounds of your voice, and that you acknowledge that he or she is smart, and understanding, and thinking about things. The whys, also answer and confirm the childs own perception of the world. S/he begin to develop her/his own tastes, interests, appreciations, thoughts, and details that s/he are focusing on and that are important to her or him. The con-firmation comes by the way that you answer the why ques-tion. As she begins to grow you can reflect some of the whys back to her. Why do you think its a good idea? Why do you think that we should clean your room? Why do think that we have to be to school on time? Why do you think that the birds wings are the way they are? Or you can say Lucy, Michael, you know why? You tell me why we can do this? It helps their own thought patterns and confidence when children are able to manage an answer to the why. If you allow the whys to be asked you can begin to have simple discus-sions with your children, and as they get older they will assimilate greater details and complexities of this world, and have an in depth understanding of how things work. I really believe that even young children can have under-standing of complex issues if you talk with them as if they can understand. Never underestimate the childs ability to grasp something if you break it down into little bits of information that s/he can manage. Too many times, chil-dren have not been exposed to expanded knowledge, or allowed to be part of a discussion. I think many parents are intimidated by their childrens thought process, and the whys and why nots because they dontwant to look foolish in front of the children and also because they dont really think about a fulfilling answer that the child can grasp for his or her age. They just assume that the child will not understand anyway. If you take a moment and really think about how best to answer that question so that he can understand and can process it for himself, you can have a really special engaging moment with him. In answering the question why for some parents or guardians, it brings up the parents own insecurities, hesitation or fear. If you really dont know the answer to the question, it could be a great opportunity to answer candidly I dont know. But we can find out together by going to the library. Just by answering truthfully, it shows that you dont know all the answers, but you can create an adventure of discovery. It could also show your child that it is okay that he/she doesnt have all the answers stored in his/her brain either. Even a question, that addresses compassion such as giving food, clothing or assistance to others in need, can be used as a tool to create greater empathy or compassion in your child. Remember that children learn by example. Make them aware of people in need and how you both can help. Answering the initial why will probably lead to other whys but the child will be developing and connecting to causes or better way of being for both the planet and his/her own spiritual development. So as often as you can, answer the whys. When you really dont know, dont lie, dont pretend, and dont ignore your child. Make an adventure out of finding the answer. The whys are only going to transform into thread of discussion and interaction if they are answered. If they are not answered, they become bewilderment, confusion, frustration, bitterness, and eventually the whys stop coming because someone else is answering them. Property Marking For Crime Prevention & Detection

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

By Digby Farquart In simple terms, if you want your stolen property returned to, mark it. There are a variety of methods in which you may mark property for crime prevention and detection. Visible property marking may offer a crime prevention element and act as a deterrent where the criminal sees the mark and chooses not to steal the property. Engraving Engraving & chemical etching are popular property marking methods. They do cause disfigurement to the item and clearly effects any resell value. Simple visual clues are post codes/zip codes; others might be a registration or serial number that can verify ownership of property via a database. Labels A range of labels in the form of stickers and plates, affixed by glue or chemically bond to the item contains the important information to identify the owner or the database where the owners details are recorded. Such labelling may be tamper-proof labels that cannot be removed without extreme damage or visible evidence of identification removal. High technology allows for anti-counterfeiting properties incorporated within the label such as holograms. Bar Codes We see barcodes on almost every product we buy but linear bar code that complies with international recognised standards can divulge security information when read by a bar-code scanner. Ensure the code is secure and a specialist scanner is used to read the bar code Covert property marking is generally invisible thus a would-be thief would not see the actual mark but deterrent notices would be useful as a crime prevention. Chemical Property Marking Unique chemical compounds can be registered to a particular owner and invisibly marked onto items so that forensic examination may identify the chemical code and thus the rightful owner. DNA marking for example offers a way of invisibly marking property with DNA until police use their equipment to detect the owners DNA and prove theft. It is simple enough to apply by using a special pen that is first dabbed on a fingertip, and then by touching the property with the same finger, the DNA is transferred. It remains there for some thirty years. For further information see www.hertfordshire.ukcrimeprevention.org Biometrics The use of biological data related to the owner, such as DNA, also includes facial analysis, retina recognition and finger scanning. The are now being introduced in airports and other access control areas. Micro-marking Micro marking comprises microscopic dots each bearing unique code numbers or specific details of the owner. When applied to an item the micro marking is virtually invisible until inspected and usually requires examination under a microscope. Tracking devices These devices are located by reference to receivers such as aerials or satellites and then transmit locational information. This s detected by scanners and cross bearings to fix the position. Radio frequency identification tags (RF/id) These tracking devices are used not just in property recovery but also the tracking of animals. IImplanting the a small device that contains an aerial and a microchip containing identification information allows a scanning device that uses radio waves to read the information contained within the tag. These tags may be embedded in natural and synthetic materials such plastics and wood or surface mounted on metals. Radio frequency read/write tags These R/F devices are very similar to the above except that certain information may be included in the tag memory, new information added or information deleted over a period of time using a read/write scanner. PIN code Like the PIN we use at cash machines, the inclusion of a PIN (Personal Identification Number) within the electrical circuit of an item or a security device attached to it, inhibits the function of the item until the PIN is correctly entered via a keypad and identifies the owner. Registration databases There are a number of commercial operations that register property against serial or code numbers, some register stolen property such as art and antiques. Other registers may specialise in specific items such as; caravans, computers, plant equipment. There are also business specific registration databases and specialise in all assets for companies or local authorities. Insurance and credit card companies offer registration and replacement services for valuables such as keys and credit cards. Photographic databases Mentioned before were registration databases for art and antiques; with digital technology, facilities are available to store photographs of works of art, antiques or other valuables as hard copy or computer held photographic records. These databases are ideal for items that are not suitable for marking due to the value and potential damage. Property marking for crime prevention and detection is an important activity. Costs can me as low as 10 to mark 1000 items with your DNA. The real value of your property should reflect the budget for asset and property marking. Before you pass personal and financial details to a commercial registration database, check them out. Digby Farquart is a UK security consultant and crime prevention advisor. Refinance Your Car Loan - 3 Tips For Refinancing Your Auto Loan Online

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Carrie_Reeder]Carrie Reeder Refinancing your car loan is an ideal way to lower your interest payments or reduce your monthly payments. By using online auto loan lenders you can be assured that you are finding the lowest rate. To be sure you are getting the best terms, follow these three tips before you refinance your vehicle. 1. Plan Your Payments Before you refinance your auto loan, decide what your goal is. Do you want a reduced interest payment or have a smaller monthly payment? With your goal in mind, you can choose terms that will best meet your needs. To find reduced interest payments, it is best to have improved your credit rating. One easy way to do this it to pay your credit cards down to 50% of their limit. You can also find lower interest rates by choosing a loan shorter than the typical five year period. To reduce your monthly payments, look for a loan for a longer period. You dont even have to find lower interest rates to lower your monthly payment. However, you will be paying more in interest payments over the course of your loan. 2. Come Prepared To speed through the refinance process, gather all your financial information ahead of time. If you dont know the current balance on your loan, call to get the exact amount. Also be sure that you have the correct address to mail in the check. Having a copy of your last tax forms will also make filling out the forms for quotes or a loan application easy. 3. Compare Quotes When you are ready to find an auto loan, compare quotes before you pick a lender. You can get quotes instantly from online lenders and brokers. Auto loan brokers partner with several lenders to offer you multiple quotes. Auto loan brokers strive to offer the lowest rates, so you may find a better deal through their sites than going to the individual lenders site. While rates and terms are important to compare, also take a look at fees and repayment options. You dont want to get locked into a deal that you cant pay early or refinance. Tips on Choosing the Best Skin Care Product for You

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

By Ellen Kennedy Your face is the first thing that people notice when they meet you. So, it is no wonder that skin care is big business! Millions are spent each year to treat acne, under eye circles, wrinkles, discolorations, and a variety of other ailments. If you are in the market for a skin care line, there are a few things that you should consider before settling on a product. First you need to look at the type of ingredients the product contains, and then find out what works best for your particular skin type. So, get ready to put your best face forward! A good skin care product is only as good as its ingredients. Make sure to read the label before you buy. If you are unable to pronounce anything on the bottle, move on to something else. The best skin care products are made with natural ingredients. Look for a formula with Aloe Vera and vitamin E for a great complexion. You want a skin care line that keeps you looking your best, while feeling great on your skin. Cleansers and creams shouldnt burn or sting. Depending on your skin type, you may find that formulas that contain alcohol can actually aggravate your problem. So do your homework beforehand. If you have a specific problem like acne or sun damage, you will want to find a skin care line that focuses on your problem areas. Benzyl peroxide has been known to work wonders on acne, while alpha-hydroxy helps improve the appearance of wrinkles or sun damage. If you have dry skin, you will want to find a formula that helps replenish the moisture in your face. Products made with Aloe Vera and Vitamin E are particularly good at this. Look for skin care lines that come in a cream or a lotion form. A good humidifier used at night may also help improve your complexion. Always remember that excess washing can actually dry your face out further, so limit your washings to once or twice a day. If you are plagued by oily skin, you may find that acne is a major problem for you. Here again excess washing can aggravate the problem, so limit washings to once or twice a day. Follow up your skin care routine with a quality astringent or toner. This will help control the amount of oil on your face, and reduce the number of breakouts. Combination skin can be a tricky situation. You have patches of dry skin as well as oilier regions. Look for a formula that is specifically designed for your type of skin. Oil absorbing masks applied to the T-zone (your forehead, nose, and chin) once a week will help control oil and breakouts. No matter what type of skin you have, you should have no trouble finding a skin care line to suite your needs. The key is to understand what different ingredients do. Research anything that you dont understand- and dont be fooled into thinking that a product has to be expensive to work. Some of the best products on the market cost less than $10 dollars a bottle! My Search for Happiness in the First Year of Sobriety

Friday, October 12th, 2007

By Jeannie Long DAY 1: HOUR BY HOUR Happiness in sobriety? Could this really be possible? Yes, I know I need to quit drinking if I want to continue to live. Survival during sobriety maybe, but happiness seems almost out of the question. I do feel a little glimmer of hope when I see other sober women who seem happy. Could I get there too? I wont think about that now. First I must somehow find a way to quit drinking. I will try to get through today without a drink. I will survive this day hour by hour. I know that I have to begin to really try. DAY 3: PROUD BUT SCARED Its been three days without a drink! I feel proud of myself but Im also scared to death that I wont be able to maintain this. Maybe if I accept the fear but dont let it take over, I can continue. The women in my group have given me praise for what I have accomplished. That feels good. I dont want to let them and myself down. Just one more day, I can do it! I am feeling uneasy about myself. Thoughts have been coming to mind about what I dont like in my life, oh, what I wouldnt give to have a drink to numb my brain. How can I stay sober and deal with all these problems in my life too? I feel angry, its not fair! I also feel angry at myself for letting my life get so out of control. Guilt will just get me drinking again so I can’t go there. I need to try to think positive and just know that not drinking is enough for now. 3 WEEKS: MORE IN CONTROL Its been three weeks! I heard once that to establish a new pattern, it takes 21 days. Its true that I feel a little more in control now. My need to drink seems to occur more with mental triggers than with a physical need. When I feel sad or lonely or angry, its the worst. Staying with my real feelings and honoring them is tough. My group keeps telling me that getting to know myself will help me stay sober. Then why do I feel all this guilt about what I seem to need or desire. Will I have to change all the relationships in my life? Will they stick with me when they get to know the real me? Its too scary to think about if they are unwilling to grow and change with me. 3 MONTHS: COULD THIS BE PEACE? Its been three months with no alcohol. When I was walking on the beach today, I felt a moment of peace and acceptance with myself. Could this be happiness? I noticed that as soon as I tried to soak it in, I felt a desire to drink again. Why do I want to sabotage myself? Is it because I dont think I deserve to be happy? 1 YEAR: ACCEPTANCE Its been over a year now. My life used to be filled with busy activities, always finding a way to distract from what I really felt. Drugs and alcohol also served this purpose. Now my work is to accept my feelings, sit with them daily during meditation, and try to live in the moment as much as possible. I used to think happiness was something big, like exhilaration or joy, when I felt ecstatic! Yes, that is happiness, but those moments come rarely. Jean Kirkpatrick, Ph.D., founder of the Women for Sobriety Program, was right when she said happiness is created, not waited for. It takes practice to feel happiness or at least peace. THE BIGGER PICTURE Someone once told me that if I had the key to happiness, I would be happy while doing the dishes. Yeah, right! The truth is that life is often filled with many small, repetitive tasks. Happiness comes during those moments when I know that I am doing the right task, and that only occurs when I know what my bigger picture is. My more difficult and long-term goals include keeping my Women for Sobriety group going, building my business, and learning art and dance. When I know that I am working steadily towards those goals, I can enjoy the beautiful view of nature I see outside my kitchen window and feel happiness while doing the dishes! APPRECIATION I need to work on developing awareness and appreciation of the small moments throughout the day that provide the opportunity for me to feel happy: a beautiful blue bird flying in front of my window while I type this, my daughter singing in the other room, me writing this on New Years Day because I had a desire to. I wish for you the strength to look inward and find your own road to happiness. Jeannie Long About the Author Jeannie Long now enjoys 8 years of continuous sobriety. The Importance Of Being A Cell Phone

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Lisa_Marx]Lisa Marx Hi, I am a cellphone. I go by several names in this world, though youll mostly find me being called Motorola or Nokia or LG, even Samsung at times (minus Delilah, of course!). I am often mistaken as a kid but I really have been around in some form or the other for almost 130 years, since Alexander Graham Bell took out a patent on my great grandpa the telephone in 1876. Telephone revolutionized the way people viewed distance communication and as a cellphone I am an heir to that legacy. Shoving modesty out of the way Id say I have done justice to that by revolutionizing distance communication even further. Although when I first made an appearance I looked a lot like a something you could hit people with, as years have gone by several inventors and technical design people have ensured I look slimmer and am more efficient. I am an important and a very significant part of everyday life and though I used to be a luxury at one point of time today I am a constant companion for people of all ages, from all walks of life. With my help you could be conducting your business, helping a friend cope with heartache, planning the next barbecue and even taking pictures of a newborn grandchild! One of the best places to find me and not have to rob a bank to pay for owning me is the Internet. It is the big bad world of discounts, easy shopping, easy to use, and a lot of fun.
